Hopeless review

Hopeless
By: Colleen Hoover

**5 Stars**

What is do you call it when it’s not quite love, but more than like? LIVE, that’s what.
“I live you,” I whisper to him.
He kisses my head again and sighs into my hair. “I don’t think I live you back anymore. I’m pretty sure I’ve moved beyond that. Actually, I’m psoituuve I’ve moved beyond that, but I’m still not ready to say it to you. When I say it, I want it to be separate from this day. I don’t want you to remember it like this.”
I pull his hand to my mouth and kiss it softly. “Me, too.”
And once again in my new world full of heartache amd lies, this hopeless boy somehow finds a way to make me smile.

I want to begin by saying, I did not read a synopsis for this story, nothing. I went in completely blind, and I did it on purpose. I wanted to feel every single word, and I did. I have never felt a story as much as I did Hopeless. I still don’t know where to start. So I’m winging it, and hoping I can give at least a glimpse into this work of art. Holden and Sky have a sadly amazing story. Just like all of Colleen’s stories, the plot is not bubblegum, it is the “more” I search for. Right now I wish I was a poet, just so I could find the words to fully express what I feel for Colleen Hoover. I’m not going to lie and say this was the most beautiful story ever written. It wasn’t. It was real, it goes places no other author I’ve ever read have gone, but to be honest with you, no other author could pull it off. I cried the ugliest cry. It was a cry I didn’t even know I had in me anymore. In fact, I’m crying just saying those words. I had to stop reading for a little while and send a message to the author and feel her out (not up) before I could finish. She cheered me up with a little story about an inappropriate unicorn. They’re always such trouble.
Fuck all the firsts, Sky. The only thing that matters to me with you are the forevers.”
Sky and Holden live in the same neighborhood for 7 years before meeting. Sky was homeschooled with no TV, no internet, cell phones, no technology at all. She’s able to talk her mom into letting her do her senior year of high school at the local school. Holden has a bad reputation, got kicked out last year for beating up a gay boy from class. Sky tries her best to stay away, but how long can she stay away from the dimples she wants to lick?
I can’t give anymore away about the storyline without giving the whole book away. You need to feel it. There is so much lightness in such a dark story. I can’t even put into words what I felt. Colleen Hoover knows how to capture an audience. She deserves the #1 spot on the NYT Bestsellers list. Thank you Colleen, for your story, your sense of humor, and being there for me through the ending.

This quote is unrelated to the story between Holden and Sky, but I loved it in such a special way. This is Breckin. He’s a Mormon… and gay. I wish more of the world could see it so black and white.
“If God’s the type of guy that would damn you to Hell just for loving someone, then I wouldn’t want to spend eternity with Him, anyway.”

  1. I think it was a great review. It was a hard read for me too because of some family history but it was well done, captivating, heart-wrenching sad and soul building all at the same time. You can either stay on the ground or dust off your pants and stand up taller (paraphrase of course) but summed it up beautifully and accurately true to life!
